A professional i admire……Jon Hicks

October 22, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Last week in my tutorial i was asked to choose a professional that i admire from my chosen field, which is web design, and explain that choice.

The professional i have chosen is a man named Jon Hicks of the design agency Hicks Design.

Ive chose him for a number of reasons, but primarily because the work he does is pretty much exactly what i’d like to be doing myself in a few years down the line.

He doesn’t just design web sites, in his own words he designs for ‘print and new fangled media’ and particularly loves icons and logos.

Above are some examples of his work, both web sites and logos. I enjoy the appearance of all the above projects, all nicely designed without being too arty, simple without being too basic.

I’m extremely interested in logo design, an interest which was discovered as a result of my identities coursework last year, so the Firefox and Miro logos are particularly interesting to me.

I found out how time consuming and difficult a process it is to design logos last year and as a result i can really appreciate the work that must have gone in to create those, its a difficult balancing act between detail and simplicity and with the logos above i think he has captured that balance perfectly.

Now for a word regarding the web design aspect of Jon’s work.

Jon is an advocate of web standards and css based design, which is obviously an approach i am keen to take to my own web work in the future. The interesting thing is the way his websites still manage to be so appealing from a design perspective but also so good from a technical and usability perspective.

Looking at the above screen shot of his own personal website, i love the way that all the navigation is housed within the box on the right of the screen. So many websites are ruined by ugly and awkward navigation systems and this is a perfect example of how keeping it simple is best.

The multi-disciplinary approach to design is very much something that interests me, whilst i am specialising in web design this year i am very keen to develop my design skills across a variety of areas such as traditional graphic design for print, identity/branding design, motion graphics and i also retain a great interest in audio production, hopefully the combination of these skills will one day lead to me having my own design agency much in the same vein as Hicks Design.

What I’ve been up to part 1 – Fly FM

Fly FM - www.trentstudents.org/fly

Last year i decided to get involved with the uni’s radio station, Fly Fm, and i enjoyed it so much that at the end of the year i successfully applied for the Position of Head of Production on the committee. This means that i am responsible for the majority of production on the station such as show jingles, adverts, editing interviews and events that we record into packages ready for broadcast and overseeing the updating of website content.

With a somewhat lacklustre year of broadcasting last year much hard work was undertaken during the summer months to ensure we were ready to broadcast on the first day of freshers week and that we would re-launch with a bang!

A full schedule was devised and every show needed jingles, adverts, promos and other such radio friendly goodness! Which is where i came in, using mainly Adobe Audition i have been working on this task over the last few months and am still very busy up to this day. It was a big task but with the help of Mark Crossley we managed to get the job done and were ready for freshers week.

Below is a selection of the audio i have produced, please listen and tell me what you think, good or bad all feedback is appreciated folks!

Year 2 Begins…..

October 18, 2007 · Leave a Comment

The time for blogging is back, its been a while since Ive wrote one of these but now as i start my 2nd year of study i shall be regularly documenting my thoughts and progress on this wonderful thing.

Last year i used ‘Blogger‘ but over the summer i decided to switch to wordpress. I prefer the range of themes available and also the potential for customisation of my blog in the long term is far greater on this platform than blogger.

For those of you that care, all of my posts from last year can still be found here

Well thats it for my first post, just a little introduction. I’ll be updating properly soon as i already have some work to be getting on with and will also be posting details of what ive been up to over the summer, bet you cant wait……
