Looking to the future…..

April 8, 2008 · Leave a Comment

As i prepare to embark on my 3rd term of my 2nd year ive been reflecting on my experience thus far and have come to the stark realisation that my standards have slipped this year in a number of ways, with that in mind i have created this poster as a reminder to myself, a mission statement if you like that i shall keep in mind as i continue into the latter stages of my degree.

Inspired by the “Design is…..” series of images, a nice simple typographic composistion, i have been reading a lot lately about using grids for composistion and layout and experimented with one in this design.

Below are two variations on the same theme.

A CD cover…..

March 31, 2008 · Leave a Comment

My girlfriend wanted me to do her a cd of some new music i had so i thought, rather than just your standard burn the cd and scribble on it in marker pen i would create a cover for it.

I wanted a mainly typographic cover, i found a cool font to use from dafont.com and experimented in photoshop with brushes, the eraser and burn tools to get a worn/grungey look.

After quite some time tweaking things, ive produced 3 versions, i think i’m favouring the simpler less grunged up version, less is more as they say.

Some Fly FM based work….

February 5, 2008 · 1 Comment

Here’s a few bits and pieces that I’ve been working on for Fly FM recently

Inside Trent Logo

I created this logo for the Inside Trent show, a show that provides information on all the weekly goings on at our university. After playing around with a few ideas, i came up with the idea of having the Inside form the Top of the T of Trent. I thought this was quite a nice play on the ‘inside trent’ name without being too complicated.

The logo has been adapted below for use in different situations by Stephanie Coombs (designer for the Students Union website and Platform magazine), i believe this shows versatility of my initial idea and i like what she has done with it.

I also have come up with this graphic for the Fly FM Presenter pages, its still a work in progress and needs to be touched up here and there but i think the foundations are in place and it looks a lot better than the plain text based pages we had before.

Mixing Pixels and Vectors……

January 8, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I came across this tutorial recently……………

It details the technique for creating an image using both pixels and vectors. I decided to try my hand at it and below you can see my results, not quite as impressive as the original but i think my version is ok for a first attempt.

Many thanks to Spoon Graphics for the tutorial.

Website planning….

January 7, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Recently i had a discussion with a friend of mine who’s a budding Architect and he needed a portfolio style website. I offered to have a go at making him one. I need the experience and he cant afford a newspaper let alone a professionally made website so it works out well for both of us.Ive been in the planning phase recently and here are some of the designs ive been thinking about in response to his ‘brief’

This term we will be learning more about xhtml and CSS, so hopefully that combined with my own learning will lead to the site being finished by Easter

Ive created a rough photoshop mock up,to give Ian an idea of what it may turn out like and to get his feedback. Obviously at this stage this is just an first draft so to speak, the final design will be a much more refined version.
